Joshua Tan wins gold for PH in ‘Young Achievers’ math tilt
Ateneo de Manila Junior High School student Joshua Tan (Cardoner/8-Arrowsmith) won a gold award for the Philippines in the grade 8 division of the 2021 International Mathematics Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA), which was held online on December 18, 2021.
Joshua’s award was one of 28 golds harvested by Filipino mathletes at the competition, which attracted participants from India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. The 172-member Philippine math team also bagged 32 silvers and 51 bronzes, topping host country Thailand’s haul of 18 golds, 27 silvers, and 47 bronzes.
The IMOYA aims to strengthen the mathematical intuition and computational skills of participants. It also promotes cross-cultural interaction and espouses camaraderie, understanding, and respect for diversity.
