Xavier Algenio receives HKIMO final round's Legend Award

Ateneo de Manila Junior High School mathletes Xavier Algenio (Montserrat/9-Lewis) and Lance Abarquez (La Storta/9-Fernandes) won medal awards for the Philippines in the 2021 Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) Final Round, which was held online on August 28, 2021.

Xavier won a gold award in the secondary 2 division and was ranked #23 globally. In addition, he also received the Legend Award for winning gold awards in the three competitions organized by the Olympiad Champion Education Center (OCEC): the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO), the Guangdong Big Bay Bei (BBB) Mathematical Olympiad, and the HKIMO. He is one of only 19 Filipinos to receive the Legend Award.

For his part, Lance won a silver award in the secondary 3 division and was ranked #42 globally.     

Xavier and Lance were among the 462-strong Philippine delegation at the HKIMO, the largest ever to represent our country at the Olympiad. All in all, 1,333 mathletes from Australia, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam harvested 373 gold awards, 477 silver awards, and 483 bronze awards at the 2021 HKIMO Final Round. HKIMO gold awardees have been invited to participate in the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) Final, to be held online on January 8 - 9, 2022.

The winners were announced during a virtual ceremony that premiered on the Olympiad Champion YouTube channel on October 3, 2021.

The HKIMO aims to create a platform for math enthusiasts around the world to come together for an educational and cultural exchange. Topics covered in the secondary division of the Final Round were logical thinking and algebra.
