Ateneo Law School hosts parents’ orientation

August 02, 2019

The “Open House for Parents of First Year Students," held July 29 at the auditorium of the Ateneo Professional Schools in Makati,  brought together parents and Ateneo Law School (ALS) administrators. ALS Dean Atty. Jose Maria G. Hofileña led the two-hour plus morning session. “Thank you for entrusting your children to us,” he said.

“We are more than a law school; we commit ourselves to teaching law at the highest standards not solely to help them pass the bar but to help them prepare for life.”

Atty. Jose Maria G. Hofilena, Dean of the Ateneo Law School, stresses the important role of parents as their children nagivate law school life.

More than striving for academic excellence, Hofileña noted the significance of value formation: “What is important to us is the matter of value formation, the values of your children. Because it is our firm belief that ultimately the kind of lawyers your children would become is influenced by the kind of persons they become. With that commitment, we want to provide an environment and an example that nurtures value formation together with teaching them the law.”

The activity was an opportunity for parents to discuss their concerns, questions and hopes about law school.

Associate Dean for Student Affairs Atty. Giovanni F. Vallente gave an overview of the array of services afforded to students, including financial aid, student life, support and discipline programs. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Atty. Maita V. Chan-Gonzaga, on the other hand, provided an introduction to the J.D. curriculum.

Fr.Sigmund B. De Guzman, SJ, chaplain of the Ateneo Professional Schools, spoke on Ignatian spirituality and becoming a lawyer for others. “ Ignatian spirituality considers everything in a student that is important  in his or her own formation.”

To serve others is the ultimate goal of the school, says Fr. Sigmund B. De Guzman, SJ

Also on hand to share their thoughts were senior student Arriene Yvette Rase and Mrs. Peachy N. Avanceña, an ALS parent.

Rase, who is also the president of the Ateneo Law Student Council, stressed the role of support systems in surviving law school. An established support system, in the form of family, friends, classmates, and even teachers could make a difference, she said.

Avanceña, mother of Issa—who graduated in 2018 and recent bar passer—told fellow parents to just be there for their children. “Just listen and encourage them to keep talking.”

As parents, it is important to be mindful and give children their space, says Mrs. Peachy N. Avancena, an ALS parent.

The open house ended with a campus tour.
