As March is International (and National) Women’s Month, here are a few relevant Ateneo Law School (ALS) tidbits:
1. It was only in the late 60s—more than 30 years after its establishment—that the ALS admitted women as students. Julieta Feliciano was the first female ALS graduate and the only one in her Class of 1970. Currently, around 58% of the ALS student population is female.
2. In the years that followed ALS producing its first female graduate, the ALS has had 24 women Class Valedictorians. The first being Ma. Isabelita A. Tapia (1971) and the most recent was Rio Mei L. Uy (2020).
3. Since 1936, the ALS has had twelve Deans, only one of them a woman: Dean Cynthia Roxas-Del Castillo. But it was our sole female ALS Dean who has served the longest, from 1990 to 2000.
