AHS Debaters

Luigi Alcañeses & Renz Reyes are IDeA 3 champions
The team of Renz Reyes (11-A) & Luigi Alcaneses (11-A) won the grand final of the Interscholastic Debaters’ Association (IDeA) championship in the afternoon of January 24, 2016. As AHS A, Reyes & Alcañeses competed against two teams from ICA and a team from PAREF Woodrose in the final, winning on the affirmative side of the motion, “This house supports anti-natalism.” Anti-natalism is a philosophical position that morally opposes, or places negative value, on child birth. Renz Reyes was also awarded Best Speaker of the Final.
The teams of Nicky Solis (11-B) & Ervin Grana (11-L), Carlos Tiu (11-A) & Sam Zabat (10-G), and Lorenzo Lazaro (11-A) & Matti Tan (9-A) all reached the semifinals of the tournament. AHS was the first high school in all three invitationals this year to have four teams remaining in the semifinal.  Finally, the team of Paulo Valencia (11-N) & Hans Gonzalez (10-M), reached the tournament Quarterfinals.
AHS also brought in more individual speaker awards than any other team this tournament. Reyes was ranked as the Overall Best Speaker of the tournament, following  the exact same accomplishment from IDeA 1 held earlier in the school year. Valencia was ranked as the Third Best Speaker, Alcañeses as the Fifth Best Speaker, and Gonzalez as the 9th Best Speaker. The four awardees were also ranked among the Top Ten Speakers of the Country at the Philippine Schools Debate Championship (PSDC) a week prior.
IDeA is a conglomeration of high school debate teams from all over Metro Manila. The 3rd IDeA was held at the University of Santo Tomas High School from January 23-24, 2016. The event was attended by high school debate teams from Xavier School, Immaculate Conception Academy, PAREF Woodrose, and others. A total of 72 debaters attended the tournament, which consists of three preliminary rounds and three elimination rounds, also known as “break rounds.”
The AHS Debaters are moderated by Mrs. Fe U. De Jesus of the English Department. The team was coached for IDeA 3 by Miguel Ventura, Isaac Lee, Rafa Lapira, and Henry Fernando. The team extends its thanks to the Office of Student Activities (OSA) headed by Ms. Kristine Valdellon for its support for the team.
