Subject            :           Appointment of Dr Carmela C Oracion as Ateneo High School Principal

Dr Carmela C Oracion (Mel) will be Ateneo High School Principal from 1 April 2015 to 31 May 2018.

Upon the recommendation of the Search Committee for the Ateneo High School Principal, and with the approval of the Ateneo de Manila Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Carmela C Oracion (Mel) as Ateneo High School Principal for a 3-year term, from 1 April 2015 to 31 May 2018.

Mel has been with the Ateneo de Manila for the past 31 years. She served our High School in various capacities as faculty member, chairperson of the Math Department, Associate Principal for Academic Affairs, and Principal from 1998-2006. She is currently the Assistant to the Vice President of Basic Education, Officer-in-Charge of the Junior High School, and Director of the Ateneo Center for Educational Development.

She graduated with a BS Mathematics degree from the Ateneo de Manila in 1984 and has an MA in Mathematics Education degree from the University of the Philippines, 1989. She completed her Doctor of Education degree (EdD Dual Award Program) from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University and Institute of Education, University of London in 2014.

As Ateneo High School Principal, Mel shall oversee the integration of the Junior High School and the establishment of the Senior High School. The academic and formation programs for both Junior and Senior High are tailored according to the developmental stages of the students in these levels, thus requiring some degree of autonomy between the two school units. However, continuity and unity between the two school units are envisaged to be beneficial to the holistic formation of our students, hence, the deliberate effort to observe the principles of autonomy and unity within the Ateneo High School.

On behalf of the Ateneo de Manila, I would like to thank Mel for her magnanimity in taking on this new mission of leadership at the Ateneo High School, even as she leads our work in public education reform through the Ateneo Center for Educational Development.

As we welcome Mel, we also express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Gabriel F Mallillin (Gabby) for his dedicated service as Principal of the Ateneo High School for the past three years. We are grateful to him for leading the transition to a new era of lay leadership at the Ateneo High School.

ad majorem Dei gloriam,
