SUBJECT: Sore Eyes / Conjunctivitis

Recently, AHS Health Services has noted a marked increase in the number of students complaining of redness of the eyes or sore eyes. Eyes irritation can be caused by various factors such as foreign body or application of artificial tears. Proper hygiene should be done to contain the infection and decrease the chances of infecting others. Additionally, ophthalmic solutions and antibiotic treatment may be warranted necessitating a visit to an eye doctor or ophthalmologist.

In light of this, may we ask the community to report any cases of eye redness, eye pain, itching, burning or foreign-body sensation, excessive tearing, and excessive mucous secretion of the eye. Students with these symptoms would need evaluation. Most cases of infections are viral and will resolve on its own after a week or so. Bacterial infections warrant antibiotic use and therefore necessitate consult with an eye doctor.

For those diagnosed with Acute Conjunctivitis, additional steps that may be taken to reduce the soreness would include:

  • Avoiding rubbing your eyes
  • Cleansing your hands always
  • Taking “eye breaks” from activities that may be causing eye strain
  • Getting more sleep at night,
  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
  • Eating a well-balanced diet

Sore eyes or conjunctivitis is usually relegated as a “summer” illness. However, it may occur anytime and may spread rapidly. We hope for your cooperation in order to contain this infection and avoid unnecessary school absences for students and other members of the community.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
