Locsin Awards Recognizes Student Journalists
The Department of Communication recognized the exemplary contributions of Ateneo campus journalists through the 20th Raul L. Locsin Awards for Student Journalism.
Ateneo alumnus and BusinessWorld founder Raul L. Locsin, who was the recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism in 1999, donated his award money to celebrate the efforts of passionate students who wish to pursue a career in journalism.
The winners of this year's awards are:
- News Category: Cholo Hermoso and Micah Avry Guiao for their article "LS Further outraged after UCMO statement on sexual harassment cases"
- Features Category: Genesis Jacinth Tan for her article "Fragile labels"
- Opinion Category: Cristina Batalla for her article "Faith in a hypocritical Church"
- Investigative Journalism: Gerard Ignacio and Jean Mangaluz for their article "Broad strokes of black"
- Explanatory Journalism: Carlo O. Fernandez and Zachary C. Gonzales for their article "A new broom sweeps streets clean"
- Photojournalism: Michael Perfecto for his piece on the 2019 midterms elections Black Friday protest
The distinguished board of judges for the awards are composed of ABS-CBN's Arlene B. Burgos, Manila Standard columnist Adelle Chua, Rappler's Chito de la Vega, and GMA Network's Victoria Tulad. The photojournalism entries were judged by Veejay Villafranca, Cheryl Borsoto-Nasol and Aaron Vicencio.
The Department is also happy to announce that the recipient of the Raul L. Locsin Scholarship in Journalism is Jeanella P. Mangaluz, AB Communication student. The scholarship committee is composed of Dr. Severino Sarmenta, Dr. Violet Valdez, and Ms. Luz Rimban.
