Juancho Cajucom is AHS' first Evelio Javier awardee since 2009
The Evelio Javier award is the highest honor one can receive from the Ateneo de Manila High School at commencement, one that is not given every year. Prior to 2013, the last AHS graduate to receive the award was Dom Joseph B. Bulan of A2009 (Bulan was also the AHS Class of 2009’s valedictorian.). After four years, the Evelio Javier Award is being given once more, this time to Juan Miguel “Juancho” A. Cajucom of A 2013. Aside from the Evelio Javier award, Juancho is also receiving the Alfonso Yuchengco (AY) Foundation Award for National Discipline and the Mercury Drug Award for Science at the Class of 2013’s graduation on Sunday, March 24, 2013.
To know what kind of a young man Juancho is, one need only go back a few weeks to the AHS' annual Recognition Day ceremony held last February 12, 2013. There, Juancho was one of only five recipients of the Magis award which is given to members of the Ateneo High School community who exemplify servant leadership. He is also, quite possibly, the Magis' first back-to-back awardee, having received it also in February 2012. As Juancho stood onstage to receive the Magis award in front of hundreds of fellow students, teachers, and administrators, the following write-up about him was read:
“Opportunities are readily available to people but not all are able to capitalize on the opportunities given to them. Some run away from opportunities of greatness while others take every opportunity to be great. It is not Juancho’s first time to have been chosen as a magis awardee because for every opportunity that has been given to him, he rose to the challenge, not to be great but to bring others to greatness. His quiet brand of leadership as part of the Sanggu Ed-Board has enabled others to find their own brand of voice. His gentle ways of mentoring have allowed other leaders and peers to entertain other perspectives and in the end, make good decisions. His untiring dedication to and compassion for the organization he belongs to, the committees he serves and the class he has been with for the past four years, have led him to sacrifice his personal desires and needs in pursuit of a higher good. Though he may seem to overcome the difficulties easily because he does these so often and so consistently, it is worthy to note that for every minute he gives to others is a lost minute for his studies, for rest, or for sleep. When others refuse the same opportunities, he readily volunteers for it, knowing that choices that choices that pertain to his personal wants may be sacrificed.
"And in the end, it has never been about what he has done; it is always about what everyone could still do. It has never been about the admiration he will get; it has always been about the love that he could still give- the love born out of his immense love for Christ, his family and for his community. This is why Juancho Cajucom is honored for the second time, with the Magis Award. “
