Ateneans bag top prize in Business Case Competition
A group of students from the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM) emerged as the winner of the first All Ateneo Business Case Competition (AABCC) held on February 28, 2019 at Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan.
Reycel Hyacenth Bendaña (4 AB MEC), Luis Miguel Planas (3 BS AMF), Isabel Jocyn Villanueva (3 BS ME), and Maxine Rianna Yee (3 BS ME) delved into the analysis of a case about an existing company, Global Organic and Wellness Corporation (GlowCorp), which served as a marketing arm aimed to help Filipino farmers sell their products to more markets. For their in-depth analysis and strategic solution on how a social enterprise like GlowCorp can achieve its mission, the group bested teams from Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Naga University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan. JGSOM’s Mr. Immanuel Gabriel Sin mentored the team. Bendaña, who served as Team Captain, also received the Best Presenter Award.

“Preparing for the competition was challenging, but we all think that our coaches trained us enough. Ever after the competition, I know that the skills we learned—critically analyzing problems, breaking down business decisions to details, yet at the same time integrating these into the larger context of globalization—will remain with us after we graduate. More importantly, studying social enterprises accentuate the role of causes in making businesses more sustainable and more human,” Bendaña said.
AABCC was a culmination of the dream of 3 JGSOM faculty members: Mr. Johnny Filart, Mr. Jay Cruz, and Mr. Hector Guballa. For around a decade now, they have been mentoring students in analyzing a wide spectrum of case studies to prepare for local and international case competitions. The idea behind AABCC was to share the full experience of preparing for and participating in case competitions to other Ateneo universities.
Ateneo de Zamboanga took home the second spot while Ateneo de Davao placed third.
