Erwin M. Elechicon Memorial Scholarship MOA Signing
Generosity knows no bounds. A virtual MOA signing was held last January 15, 2021, to establish the Erwin M. Elechicon Memorial Scholarship. After months of online communication, Mrs. Maria Irmina N. Elechicon, widow of Ateneo College ’79 outstanding alumnus, Mr. Erwin M. Elechicon, and close friends of the late Mr. Elechicon, met with officials of the Ateneo de Manila University, led by its President, Fr. Roberto “Bobby” Yap SJ and Office of Admission and Aid Director, Dr. Jose Maria Edito K Tirol.

Mr. Elechicon received an exemplary Jesuit education from his kindergarten days at Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu to his university studies at the Ateneo de Manila University where he took up AB Economics. He was a college scholar himself and a proud Cervini dormer. He continued to actively engage with his Alma Mater long after he graduated.

Mr. Elechicon started his illustrious corporate career at Procter & Gamble Philippines and for 27 years earned the unparalleled respect and admiration of many for his excellent leadership, mentorship and work ethic. He proved that one could both “build people and sell soap” at the same time. He was well known locally and globally in his field and served as Board of Directors of various enterprises namely, Petronas Malaysia, Union Bank, Frabelle, Alliance Select Foods, U-bix & Silver Machine Digital Communications.
His sudden passing last June 2020 was a shock to all his dear family and friends and was mourned deeply. The sad occasion, however, brought back together many of his workmates, colleagues, classmates, dorm buddies and friends, resulting in a fund-raising initiative. This collective effort was known as the Erwin M. Elechicon Memorial Education Fund, towards an Ateneo scholarship endowment. This collaborative effort from over a hundred individuals and families recognized the deep and meaningful impact Mr. Elechicon had on the personal and corporate lives of so many. As a community, they wanted to give him the gift of continuing to be "a man for others", providing the means to change and improve lives for years to come.
The PhP2M Erwin M. Elechicon Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a high school graduate from Iloilo or Cebu, majoring in Economics or Management, and will reside at the Ateneo University Dorm, a background reflecting Mr. Elechicon’s provincial roots and college academic life.
Also present in the virtual MOA Signing through ZOOM were Jerson and Cristina Uy based in Singapore, Mr. Glenn Martin T. Glinoga, and OAA Staff, Ms. Jolly Morata, Tin Magboo and Joch Burias.
The Ateneo accepted this gift of scholarship with much gratitude, especially against the backdrop of a Pandemic when, as expressed by Dr. Jo-Ed Tirol, “it is very understandable that individuals and institutions would be tightening belts and not thinking of others.” It is hoped that Mr. Elechicon’s generous spirit of “giving back by paying it forward” endures in the lives of all who will benefit from this endowment.
