Generosity in the time of pandemic
The current global health crisis has exposed education gaps such as equity and accessibility especially among students from vulnerable communities. Against the grim facts of COVID-19, the need to provide quality education has never been greater. Nine years after the Management Engineering (ME) Class of 1988 completed their Scholarship Endowment donation to the University under FAME’s ME@40 Scholarship Campaign, the Class continues to inspire others, extending their hands to those who need them the most. The Class recently made a PhP 1.16 million gift to the Ateneo de Manila University.
The gift is intended to aid scholars with their needs in this uniquely challenging time of online learning: laptop provision, WiFi support, and additional allowance for utility expenses like electricity and food. A member of the same Class has also given his second personal endowment of PhP 3M, thus providing another full tuition scholarship in perpetuity for college scholars.
“The value of education has never been more important than it is today. In these unprecedented times, we as Ateneans are reminded to follow in the footsteps of St. Ignatius of Loyola — we are called to be men and women for others. We are called to serve and any act of generosity, big or small, is God’s grace,” according to the members of M.E. Class of 1988.
“Ateneo and our scholars cannot be more grateful. It is truly encouraging that when we need it most, Ateneans unreservedly respond and reach out to help others. May the rich promise of this verse ever be true to the members of M.E. Class of 1988: ‘Whoever brings blessings will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.’ May their generous spirit spark hope and further good deeds throughout the Ateneo community and beyond,” says Office of Admission and Aid (OAA) Director, Dr. Jo-Ed Tirol.
