Gig finally becomes an Atenean
Ambrosio Gregorio Oca Robles IV naturally drew people in. Gig, as his family and friends would call him, had a heart for helping others. With his intellect and good-natured disposition, Gig’s mother Marissa thought that the young man would pursue a legal career or become a priest. He excelled in high school and was set to enroll at the Ateneo de Manila for college. Gig, however, did not make it: In 2008, he had a fatal accident.
To honor his memory, Gig’s family, through the Gig and the Amazing Sampaguita Foundation Inc. (GASFI) had partnered with Ateneo de Manila University to launch the GASFI Scholarship. University officials led by its president Fr Roberto C Yap SJ and Marissa Oca of GASFI had the MOA signing on 8 February 2021.
“Through the years, GASFI has been creating opportunities for students in need to better their educational circumstances. We are hopeful and excited to come today to share this gift to another young person who will imbibe the values impressed upon Ateneans to become a person for others. Gig’s kindness and generosity continue to inspire us in helping more people grow and reach their potential,” Oca said.
“This scholarship fund will allow Ateneo to take in an exceptional student whose family conditions may not be able to fulfill the financial capability. With this gift, we are simply extending Gig’s generosity to help transform the lives of others,” said Yap. “In his young life, Gig was able to make a difference in the lives of his family, friends and community and I believe that this endeavor will continue to do that. In the end, Gig got his wish—to become an Atenean and we are more than proud, happy, and grateful to embrace him.”
