Understanding Radicalism and Preventing Violent Extremism
Understanding Radicalism and Preventing Violent Extremism

A new brand of extremism is gaining traction in the Philippines and this is targeting the youth in vulnerable communities and inside school campuses. According to studies, recruitment of ISIS-inspired local militants is being done not only through social media but also through personal interactions between vulnerable youths and recruiters. Martial Law and the ongoing crackdown on militant groups in Mindanao have caused the expansion of youth recruitment by radical groups beyond the southern region to urban areas where diaspora communities have settled.
Prof. Macrina Morados will present insights into the phenomenon from studies made on radicalism and violent extremism against the backdrop of the Islamic faith. She is the Dean of the University of the Philippines' Institute of Islamic Studies and is an authority on Muslim Personal and Family Relations Law (PD 1083), Interfaith Relations, Islamic Civilization and the History of Muslims in the Philippines.
