Biology graduate students bag awards in local and international conferences

Two MS Biology students of Ateneo de Manila University garnered awards and recognition after presenting their respective studies in separate conferences held in Nanjing, P.R. China and in Los Baños, Laguna.

Arthien Lovell Pelingen won first place in the Best Oral Presentation competition in the 4thInternational Symposium of the Benthological Society of Asia held last August 21-25, 2018 in Nanjing Agricultural University. His presentation on the “Overview of the Philippine stoneflies (Insecta: Plecoptera) with new records of Neoperla Needham, 1905 from Mindoro Island,” was co-authored by Dr. Hendrik Freitag. Prior to the symposium, Pelingen also participated in the 2nd Youth Freshwater Ecology School held last August 19-20, 2018 in Nanjing Normal University.

Rej Bagonoc won third place in the Best Poster Paper competition of the 20th Annual Scientific Meeting and Symposium of the Mycological Society of the Philippines, Inc. held last August 25, 2018 in University of the Philippines Los Baños. His study entitled “Molecular identification and characterization of biofilm-forming microbial communities from Lake Palakpakin in a fixed-bed bioreactor wastewater treatment system,” was co-authored by Roy Kristian Yanela, Johnry Maloles, Dr. Fabian Dayrit, Dr. Francisco Elegado, and Dr. Crisanto Lopez.
