SOSE students among those who bagged BPI-DOST Science Awards
Studies conducted by students from the School of Science and Engineering (SOSE) competed for the Best Project of the Year award of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) last April 5, 2016 in the Mind Museum.
Kirk Louie U. Amandoron (BS Life Sciences), Joni L. Dofeliz (BS Chemistry with BS Materials Science and Engineering) and Jhoana M. Garces (BS Biology) were among the 30 awardees from 10 universities to be given awards.
Amandoron’s project was about the “Biocompatibility of Cellulose- and Silica-Reinforced Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogels (CS-PVAH).” His advisers were Dr. Merab A. Chan and Dr. Crisanto M. Lopez.
Dofeliz and adviser Dr. Nina Rosario L. Rojas worked on the “Viability and Proliferation of Mesenchal Stem Cells on Heparin-Functionalized Chitosan/Carrageenan Scaffolds with Basic Fibroblast Growth Factors.”
“Taxonomic Studies on Genus Sparsorythus (Insecta, Ephemeroptera, Tricorythidae) with Diagnosis of Potentially New Species from the Philippines, and Association of Larvae and Imagines using Morphological and Molecular-Genetic Data” was Garces’ topic. His adviser was Dr. Hendrik Freitag.
The BPI-DOST Science Awards program has been encouraging promising scientists and researches “to reach the higher levels of excellence in their fields” in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science and biology.
