Ateneo Students Win 41st Annual Freshman Math Quiz

October 01, 2018

The Mathematics Department congratulates Kyle Patrick Dulay (1 BS CS) and Rodrigo Dexter Perando (1 BS AMF) for winning first place and second place, respectively, in the 41st Annual Freshman Math Quiz hosted by the UP Mathematics Club.  The contest was held last Sept. 22, 2018 at the UP Institute of Mathematics and Benitez Theater in UP Diliman.  A total of 123 contestants from 18 universities participated in the contest.
Kyle also emerged as the top scorer during the elimination round.
The other participants from Ateneo included Myles Denzel Delatore (1 BS APS-MSE),
Matthew Angelo Isidro (1 BS AMF), Norwyn Nicholson Kah (1 BS AMF), Romeo Dane Melendrez (1 BS AMF), Genesis Jacinth Tan (1 BS AMF), Makarios Joash Wee (1 BS PS), and Eason Wong (1 BS ME).

All nine of our contestants scored high enough to get past the written elimination round and were thus among the 18 contestants who made it to the pre-final round.  Four out of the six contestants in the final round were from Ateneo.

The students were accompanied to the contest by Dr. Christian Paul Chan Shio, faculty member of the Department of Mathematics.
While the contest is on its 41st iteration, this year was the first time it was opened to all freshman college students from all around the country.  The contest questions covered basic and advanced algebra, elementary statistics, geometry, logic, basic number theory, trigonometry, and basic calculus.
Congratulations to all our contestants!
