Overview
In Chinese Medicine, what is called the mind, spirit, and soul is not separate from the body, and is inextricable from the human person. This course will investigate the subject of the Shen (mind, body, psyche) and its intimate connection with the human body, their nature and dynamics, and the relationship in health and in disharmony. This course also introduces the principles of bodywork and meditation from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Examples of bodywork, particularly Yin Yoga, Qigong, and meditation, as well as traditional Chinese prescriptions on Qigong are explored, along with theories on personality and physiology, based on Chinese philosophical principles.
The course meets once a week for six (6) weeks consisting of lectures and workshops beginning with an overview of principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, relating to the mind and the body, proceeding to the teachings and practices originating from Chinese tradition promoting health and wellbeing for mind and body. Yin Yoga, Qigong, and meditation are introduced for the participants to incorporate into daily practice Mode of teaching will be in English and Filipino, with many Chinese terms introduced when necessary. Readings will be in English.
TCM 101 is a recommended, but not required, prerequisite
TCM 101: Traditional Chinese Medicine for Health and Wellness
This course is for anyone and everyone who is 18 years old or older, with or without any background in Chinese studies nor in any medical field. The course is designed for the general public, who wish to understand the mind and its connection to the body, through the holistic approac and natural practicesof Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Important notes
Acupunture cannot be taught in a ten week course. It is an invasive medical procedure requiring years of study and training to perform. In the Philippines, only licensed medical professionals such as physicians, nurses, physical therapists, dentists, veterinarians, and acupuncturists trained and certified by the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Healthcare (PITAHC) under the Department of Health (DOH) may practice acupuncture.
If you are a medical professional who wishes to train for acupuncture with this course, consider enrolling in TCM 10 which is specifically designed for medical professionals who wish to professionally practice acupuncture complete with eligibility of accreditation by the Department of Health Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC).

About the instructor

Francisco V. Navarro V, M.D. graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1998, under the Integrated Arts and Medicine (INTARMED) Program, and had his medical internship at the Philippine General Hospital. He trained in medical acupuncture at the Academy of Pain Research, at the St. Lukeʼs Hospital in San Francisco, under the Stanford Medical School; and at the Xiamen University Hospital, Fujian, China. Dr. Navarro is a faculty member at Ateneo de Manila University, under the Chinese Studies Program; and a consultant at St. Lukeʼs Medical Center Quezon City, and the founder of the Complementary Medicine Service at St. Lukeʼs Medical Center, Bonifacio Global City. He is also a Yin Yoga teacher, trained under Yin Yoga in Asia.
