Description of the Program
The Master of Arts in European Studies – Comparative Regional Relations of Asia and Europe (thesis track) and the Master in European Studies – Comparative Regional Relations of Asia and Europe (non-thesis track) both consist of 36 units that provide students with a specialization in Comparative Regional Relations of Asia and Europe. These programs are interdisciplinary in character as they give particular importance to the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regions, the former because of the sophistication of its integration and the latter because of its significance to the Philippines. Students of the program are expected to be able to engage in the field of regional integration in areas of international public policy, economics, culture and society. Students will also be able to engage in the fields of trade, governance, the academe and civil society.
Rationale:
Given the growth of regional arrangements throughout the world, with the European Union (EU) at its forefront as reference point of integration, the need has arisen for comprehensive knowledge and expertise on regional integration at all levels of government and society, particularly with the ASEAN integration, and EU’s enlargement.
Objectives:
The overall objective of the course is for students to be able to deepen their skills in critical analysis in order to generate new and policy-relevant knowledge about forms of governance and co-operation, and to contribute to the discourse on regional integration, especially in the cases of the EU and ASEAN.
The Master of Arts in European Studies – Comparative Regional Relations of Asia and Europe (thesis), and the Master in European Studies – Comparative Regional Relations of Asia and Europe (non-thesis) seek to:
1. Enhance students’ skills at the theoretical and practical levels for careers in international organizations, national administrations, civil society, and global companies;
2. Deepen the students’ understanding of issues on regional integration; the impact of Asia and Europe in world affairs, EU-ASEAN relations; and
3. Develop the students’ appreciation of inter-regional cooperation and integration as key elements in international cooperation and development.
