New Course Offerings for the Second Semester at the School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences is pleased to offer three interdisciplinary courses for the 2nd semester SY 2013-2014:
SocSci 109 - Understanding the Self: The Person, Community, and Nation (a new course)
This new multidisciplinary course examines the self as it develops in proximal relationships with family and peers;
in socializing institutions, such as schools or places of worship; in the macro contexts of community, society, and nation
and the political, economic, and cultural forces that transform them.
Students discuss the self-in-context from the perspectives of different social science disciplines,
namely: Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, and Political Science.

SocSci 110 - Introduction to Global Studies
This course provides an overview of global studies, and globalization in particular, from the perspective of different social science disciplines.
It examines the economic, social, cultural, political, technological, and other transformations
that have created an increasing awareness of the interrelationships and interconnectedness of oeoples and places around the globe.
It analyzes individual and institutional responses to globalization.

Hi 170 - Overview of Philippine History from Primary Sources (a new course)
(under the banner of the Department of History)
This new course is a broad survey of Philippine political, social, economic, and cultural history through the use of primary sources.
Students are exposed to the study of history through the analysis of such primary sources as firsthand accounts
by actual participants or eyewitnesses, diaries, letters, and newspaper reports
as well as non-written primary sources such as photographs, art, video, and film.
Through the careful examination of these sources, students gain experience in the process of historical interpretation and criticism.
