PoS Department Co-sponsors Talk on the Politics of SC Decisions
QUEZON CITY, PHILIPPINES - The Department of Political Science, together with the Ateneo School of Government and Ateneo School of Law, organizes a talk last 07 September 2018 on the decisions of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, covering forty-seven cases from 1986 to 2015. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Björn Dressel, Associate Professor, Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australia National University. The talk highlighted the statistical evidence that reveals the political influence of presidential appointments and votes of senior justices to high-profile decisions of the Philippine Supreme Court. It provides an empirical validation of the existing tension between court professionalism and unstable political tendencies. The panel of reactors for the presentation is composed Ms. Marites Dañguilan Vitug, Atty. Antonio G.M. La Viña, and Atty. Ray Paolo Santiago.
