Professor Emeritus Cristina Montiel is NRCP 2021 Achievement Awardee

Dr. Cristina J. Montiel, a Professor Emeritus at the Loyola Schools, has been chosen as the 2021 Achievement Awardee by the National Research Council of the Philippines- Division of Social Sciences (NRCP). The Achievement Awards are annually given to individuals in recognition of their outstanding contribution in natural sciences, health sciences, engineering, social sciences, humanities, or other human endeavors. Montiel's exemplary contributions to the social sciences lie in her cutting edge and thoughtful research on the psychology of peacebuilding and democratic transition, active nonviolence, social justice, and other topics that speak from and about the Global South. In recognition of her prominent scholarship, Montiel has received various awards from her international and local peers in peace/political psychology. She was given the Distinguished Contribution Award by Psychologists for Social Responsibility in 1998. In 2010, Montiel received the Ralph White Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association’s Peace Psychology Division. In addition, she was selected as an Outstanding Psychologist by the Psychological Association of the Philippines in 2016. In 2021, she was awarded the Lynn Stuart Weiss Lecture Award by the Division of Peace Psychology, American Psychological Association. In the same year, she was elected lifetime Academician to the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines. Montiel has also served as a consultant for the Philippine government’s Commission on Human Rights and the Office of the Presidential Adviser for the Peace Process. 

“The Award recognizes the value of my scientific work. I dedicate my life's work to fusing analytical and empirical understandings of the state, social movements, interpersonal relationships, and individual behaviors/mentalities. The creative scientific add-on of my work is in mixing the different social layers into an organized logic, embedded in Global South realities,” Montiel said.

The Awarding Ceremony will be held online on 15 March 2022.
