Dr. Emma Porio, Chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, recently presented a paper on “Assessing Vulnerability to Climate Changes Among Marginal Populations in Metro Manila” in the Conference on Adapting to Climate Change and Water Security in Asia held at Soaltee Crown Plaza, Kathmandu, Nepal last 18 – 20 June 2013.
The conference engaged policy makers in Asia with the aim of sensitizing them to the issues of climate change adaptation and water security in peri-urban zones. The conference also emphasized the need for viewing these issues into the planning and development of cities in the Global South.
The conference presentations and discussions also focused on how research and action can be integrated by learning from successful cases across the world and attracting attention of the media to disseminate these issues to the wider public. The conference was organized by Nepal Engineering College and the Bangladesh University of Engineering and technology with funding support from the International Development and Research Centre (IDRC).
