ACED holds Education Leadership Programme
August 13, 2019
The twenty-one (21) participants of the Certificate in Educational Studies in Leadership (CESL) Programme went home last Saturday afternoon challenged but inspired to begin working on their respective Transformational Action Plans which they started to craft during Workshop 1 (Foundations of Leadership) held last 1-3 August 2019.
The CESL Programme is a four-part professional development program on school leadership jointly offered by The HEAD Foundation (Singapore), the University of Queensland (Australia), the Asian Development Bank, and the Ateneo de Manila University through the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED). Through blended strategies, experiential learning and Communities of Practice, the CESL intends to provide qualified education leaders in the Philippines with a repertoire of knowledge, skills and dispositions enabling them to implement effective, culturally-based and context-responsive leadership in the school system. The workshops will be handled by UQ academics with assistance from Philippine-based and Singapore-based education specialists.

The participants were pre-screened through their performance in previous ACED programs and other credentials. The final selection was based on the essays the applicants were required to write and interviews with UQ and THF officials.
In the Opening Ceremony for the programme last Thursday, 1 August 2019, Mr Vignesh Naidu (Director for Operations, The HEAD Foundation), Atty Jaime Hofileña (VP-Social Development, Ateneo de Manila University) and Dr Carmela Oracion (Director, Ateneo Center for Educational Development) gave their messages to the participants. Dr Vicente Reyes (Educational Studies Programme Director, School of Education, University of Queensland) provided a Programme Overview.
Atty Hofileña welcomed everyone to the Ateneo de Manila and expressed deep gratitude to The HEAD Foundation, UQ, and ADB for “helping us in the Ateneo partially realize its desire to help bring together, as partners in social development, those different institutions and organizations which, in partnership, seek to effect genuine social transformation for the common good.”
Mr Naidu encouraged the participants to be “changemakers” in their respective contexts and to showcase this during the Conference in October when they present their Transformational Action Plans.
In her Closing Remarks, Dr Oracion called attention to the power of a 5-mm high domino to knock down next dominos in line until a more than 1-meter high, 100 lb domino is knocked down through chain reaction. She expressed that it is crucial to find a first problem in the school system to prioritize and then aim to solve more problems in succession.
At the end of the programme, the participants will be presenting the results of their Transformational Action Plans in a Conference that will be organized for this purpose. Upon successful completion of the customised three-month, four-course (8 units) programme, the UQ School of Education will award UQ Certificates of Completion to the participants.
