Ateneo Children’s Theater hatches ‘Honk! Jr.’
Theater-goers will soon flock to the Henry Lee Irwin Theatre with the Ateneo Children’s Theater’s production of Honk! Jr. A contemporary retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling, Honk!Jr is based on the award-winning musical Honk! by George Stiles (composer) and Anthony Drewe (books and lyrics). It won the 2000 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
“Of course we all know that at the end of the play, the values of inclusion and acceptance, the lessons on forgiveness and unconditional love, and the importance of believing in and loving ourselves, will still prevail. Hence, it is my fervent wish that our viewers will watch the play and take all these lessons to heart and with the right perspective. Hopefully the play can really have a positive and transformative effect in their minds and hearts, especially our students,” says Mr. Jervy Robles, Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs at the Ateneo de Manila Grade School.

Honk!Jr follows Ugly, who hatches looking quite a bit different from his duckling brothers and sisters. The other animals on the farm are quick to notice and despite his loving mother's protective flapping, Ugly’s odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. When Ugly is separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry Cat, he must find his way home. Along his harrowing yet hilarious journey he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms.
