Ateneo Intellectual Property Office Established
In a memo released June 7, University President Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin SJ announced the appointment of Dr. Proceso “Jon” L. Fernandez, Jr. as director of the newly established Ateneo Intellectual Property Office (AIPO). The new office is the result of the merging of the Innovation and Technology Office (ITSO) and the Technology Management Office (TMO), previously housed under the School of Science and Engineering. The integration is deemed to be the most effective way to leverage the expertise of these offices in providing services for the entire university.
Fernandez used to be the director of TMO and also worked closely with ITSO.
The newly formed AIPO will promote and implement the university intellectual property (IP) policy. In his memo, Villarin said that the office “will encourage the generation and commercialization of IPs that are valuable solutions to real-world problems.”
AIPO will also work with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL). The office is also tasked to conduct training seminars and workshops to “educate the university members regarding IP rights and the effective use of the Intellectual Property System.”
