Africa, Carlos & Tan are ISPSDS champs; Tan wins 2 Best Speaker awards
The Ateneo Senior High School team of David Africa (11-Tsuji), Matti Tan (11-Realino), & CJ Carlos (11-Wright) emerged as champion of the first ever Inter-Secondary Schools Political Science Debate Summit (ISPSDS), held on April 7and 8, 2018 at Palma Hall in UP Diliman. They triumphed against a Xavier team in the finals on a unanimous decision on the motion, "THBT the Philippine government should ban all forms of art that glorify the Marcos regime.” Matti Tan was also crowned Best Speaker of the Finals and Overall Best Speaker of the tournament. In addition, David Africa was named 2nd Best Speaker of the Tournament while CJ Carlos was named 6th Best Speaker.
Another ASHS team composed of recent graduates Pep Danguilan (12-Walpole), Miguel Yulo (12-Walpole), & Miguel Sulit (12-Kibe) finished the tournament as semifinalists. Pep was also named 5th Best Speaker of the Tournament. A third team- Lyrah Lapid (11-Hurtado), Javy Pineda (11-Garnet), and Johann Claveria (11-Wright)- broke 9th as Open Reserve Break. Lastly, another team composed of Sophia Sibal (11-Mayer), Joro Villaseñor (11-Garnet), & Jaime Luna (11-Owen), broke 2nd in the Novice Cup division.
The ASHS Debaters are moderated by Ms. Amyrrha Estelloso. The team was coached by Miguel Ventura, Isaac Lee, Nicolo Fortuna, Phil Javellana, Drico Ramiro, and Red Nadela for the competition. The Ateneo Debaters extend their gratitude to Dr. Carmela Oracion, Principal of the ASHS, and the ASHS Office of Student Activities and Formation for their support in the competition.
