ASHS boys & girls win 4 medals for PH at int'l math tilt in Thailand
Four Ateneo de Manila Senior High School students- Carissa Varon (11-Pignatelli), Nikki Dizon (11-Regis), Thor Alvis (11-Rodriguez) and Jayson Catindig (12M)- each won a medal for Team Philippines at the 2016 International Mathematics Wizard Challenge (IMWiC) that was held in Bangkok,Thailand from July 20-24, 2016. Catindig took home a gold medal while Alves, Dizon, and Varon each won a silver medal. The Philippines placed 2nd over-all behind China in the IMWiC.
As reported by InterAksyon.com, the Philippines harvested a total of 240 medals: 34 golds, 74 silvers, and 132 bronzes. Eighty-seven Pinoy math wizards were also given merit awards. The Mathematics Development Academy of the Philippines (MathDAP) reports that 350 Filipino math wizards joined the competition.
Of the four ASHS Ateneans who won medals at the IMWiC, only gold medalist Jayson Catindig came from the Ateneo Junior High School. Thor Alvis came from Stonyhurst Southville International School, Nikki Dizon came from the Valenzuela City School of Math & Science and Carissa Varon came from Falcon School.
The countries and territories which participated at the IMWiC were the Philippines, China, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau and Vietnam.
