Ateneo is Five-Peat Champ of Econvergence Debate
For the fifth year in a row, the Ateneo Debaters have successfully defended and won the Econvergence Intellectual Debate Encounter Tournament. The team of Lorenzo Lazaro (12-A), Miguel Carnecer (12-C), and Ervin Grana (12-L) won the Grand Finals against Philippine Science High School Main Campus on a 4-1 split decision. They successfully opposed the motion, “This house believes that federalism does more harm than good in underdeveloped countries.” They defeated 15 other teams, and 45 other debaters, to clinch the championship.
Meanwhile, the team of John Guban (11-Bellarmine) , Ella Torno (11-Berchmans), & Janica Ano (11-Goto) reached the semifinals of the competition. As a team comprised entirely of transferees from other schools, they proudly enjoyed and excelled in their first shot at representing ASHS at Econvergence.
The Overall Best Speaker of the Tournament was Lorenzo Lazaro, who also maintained the streak of the org in winning the highest individual award in the last few years.
Joachim Ochosa (12-L) also represented the Ateneo Debaters in the Quiz Bee Competition, and nearly scored enough points to make it into the final round of the tournament.
Econvergence is hosted annually by the UP Los Baños Economics Society as a multi-disciplinary event with various competitions. This year, it was hosted from February 4-5, 2017.
The ASHS Debaters are moderated by Mrs. Fe U. De Jesus, while the Econvergence contingent was trained by Henry Fernando. The team extends its gratitude to the CLE Department under Mr. Vincent Loiz, whose financial and logistical support made the success of the team possible. The team also extends its gratitude to Dr. Carmela Oracion and the ASHS administration for their unwavering support in the team’s many endeavors.
