Amidst the political unrest in Hong Kong, Ateneo Senior High School mathletes Nikki Chan (11-Perez), Brevin Que (11-Owen) and Bryant Que (12-Ogilvie) contributed two golds and one silver to the  Philippines’ medal haul in the 2019 Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO).  Nikki Chan and Brevin Que each won a gold medal while Bryant Que won a silver medal.  All told, 276 Pinoy math wizards brought home nine trophies, 47 gold medals, 81 silver medals, 92 bronze medals and 56 merit awards during the HKIMO.

Now on its 2nd year of holding international rounds, HKIMO welcomed 1,300 students from 19 countries namely Australia, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Singapore,  Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

The competition is open to students in Kindergarten up to Senior High School.  The written paper consists of 30 open-ended questions on five main topics, namely logical thinking, arithmetic/algebra, number theory, geometry and combinatorics.

The uniqueness of HKIMO is that aside from awarding medals and trophies to winners, all gold medalists are invited to the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) which is held every December and in a different country each year.  This year, WIMO will be held in Tokyo, Japan from December 27 to 30, 2019.
