Jimbo Bernardo is WMTC's sole perfect scorer from PH
Five Ateneo de Manila Senior High School mathletes won a total of three golds and three silvers in two separate versions of the 11th World Mathematics Team Championship (WMTC) that were held online on Nov. 21 & 29, 2020. Leading the medalists in the individual competition of the Nov. 29 WMTC was gold medalist Jimbo Bernardo (11-San Vitores), who is also the sole contestant from the Philippines to achieve a perfect score. Keean Tang also won a gold medal, while Brian Dela Cruz earned the silver medal.
Jimbo, Brian, and Keean also did well in the WMTC team competition’s advanced category, and were members of the teams that were named among the top-performing from the Philippines. Because of the online nature of the competition, the WMTC team awards did not rank the teams per its usual practice. Rather, the teams that were among the top 30% in each category were recognized. Jimbo and Brian were in Team 1, while Keean was in Team 2.
In the WMTC that was held online on November 21- also known as WMTC Beijing- both Harvey Allen Ylanan and Kelgie Ong won the silver medal in the individual competition. Harvey Allen was also a member of the team that won gold in the team competition, while Kelgie’s team earned the merit award.
The countries which participated in WMTC 2020 included Australia, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Hongkong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Qatar, Thailand, Taiwan, USA, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
