Ong wins bronze for PH at prestigious Int’l Math Olympiad
Representing the Philippines, Ateneo Senior High School mathlete Dion Ong of 12-Pro bagged a bronze medal at the prestigious 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Bath, United Kingdom from July 11 to 22, 2019. Ong’s bronze was one of the six medals (one silver, five bronzes) harvested by the Filipino mathletes. Dion is reportedly the first Ateneo High School student to win a medal in the IMO. The medal haul of one silver and five bronzes translated to a global ranking of 31 for the Philippines out of 112 countries that participated in the IMO.
Per Wikipedia, the IMO is an annual six-problem math olympiad for high school students, and is the oldest of the international science Olympiads. More than 100 countries (representing over 90% of the world’s population) participate in the competition, sending a team composed of up to six students. The IMO is one of the most prestigious math competitions in the world.
