Delocado receives Young Researchers' Grant from PH Society for Microbiology
Ateneo Senior High School science faculty Emmanuel Delocado was recently named as one of only two recipients of the Philippine Society for Microbiology’s (PSM) Young Researchers’ Grant. Sir Emman, as he is fondly called by his students, received the good news during the PSM’s 46th annual convention held last July 7, 2017 at Mall of Asia Manila. The website of PSM states that the grant “…recognizes and supports up and coming researchers and graduate students with outstanding studies in microbiology, ” adding that the grant is also based on the scientific merit of the study.
At the PSM convention, Emman presented his paper entitled “Biochemical characterization, molecular identification, and phylogenetic analysis of nitrogen-fixing Bacillus sp. isolated from Allium cepa var. ascalonicum (Sibuyas Tagalog) roots.” The paper sought to identify a possibly new species of bacterium which can be used as a sustainable fertilizer substitute when cultured in the roots of plants. Mr. Delocado accomplished the study with his colleagues at the graduate school under the supervision of Dr. Vivian Panes of the Loyola Schools.
