Santos and Tirol set 3 new records in swimming at Palaro 2019

Marco Tirol Swimming for the NCR, incoming Ateneo SHS Grade 12 student Wacky Santos and recent Ateneo SHS graduate Rian Tirol were responsible for three of the 31 records that were broken in the secondary boys’ swimming events at Palarong Pambansa 2019. Santos, the boys’ MVP of the UAAP Season 81 Juniors’ Swimming Championship, established two new Palaro records: the 200m individual medley and the 200m backstroke. Tirol set a new Palarong Pambansa record in the 100m breaststroke. His time of 1:06.09 erased the 14-year-old record of Gerard Bordado (1:07.38) that was set in 2005.
Santos’ medal haul at Palaro was six golds (200m backstroke, 200m individual medley, 100m backstroke, 400m individual medley, 4x100m medley relay, 4x100m freestyle relay) and one silver (1500m freestyle). Tirol’s medal haul was three golds (100m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke, and 4x100m medley relay) and one silver (50m butterfly).
Palarong Pambansa 2019 was held in Davao City from April 26 to May 3, 2019. NCR emerged as overall champion of the games with a total of 78 gold, 69 silver, and 48 bronze medals.
