In democratic systems, balancing the role of the state and markets in promoting social and economic goals is an ongoing challenge. It is critical to assess how this balance is struck and the extent to which democratic institutions are indeed able to foster the types of reforms necessary for more vibrant and dynamic market economies. The program focuses on the political economy of reforms. It looks at the economic and political factors that shape and sustain institutional reforms.
