Faculty Research Projects

Current projects that ES faculty are current supervising or participating in include:

  1. The 7 Lakes of San Pablo City Research Project: The studies focus on water quality assessments which considered the physico-chemical analyses of the water, the identification of biological indicators to pollution, sediment analyses, phytoplankton inventory and colliform contamination. 
  2. Wastewater Treatment: Development of cost effective waste water treatment technologies is a major research agenda of the Environmental Science Department to maintain water quality in lakes and rivers.
  3. Marikina River Quality and Monitoring: These studies focused on water quality assessments of the Marikina River, which considered the physico-chemical analyses of the water, the identification of biological indicators to pollution, sediment analyses, and macroinvertebrate analysis. Other analysis also considered metal concentrations of lead and cadmium and other pollution related studies.
  4. Geohazard Vulnerabilities of the Marikina Watershed:  Geological hazards would include volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and mass wasting.   Various studies have been done to scientifically understand the Marikina Watershed, and there is a need to evaluate all of theses to provided bases for proper risk and disaster management programs.  Communities should have some sense of preparedness and awareness and for them to formulate policies in mitigating disasters.
  5. Metallophyte Research Project and Phytotechnologies Program: In connection with the Responsible Mining Program, the use of phytoremediation is applied towards mine-related rehabilitation work. Included is the identification of hyperaccumulators which could actually be propagated in nurseries and eventually planted in selected mined-out areas still with significant contents of metals. 
  6. Public Health and the Environment: The researches aim to assess the risk associated with xenoestrogens as well as various anthropogenic activities as an aid in establishing proper waste water protocols, in risk and impact assessment and in policy formulation for public health and the environment.
  7. Development of Standard Methods for Toxicity Testing: In response to the need for the development of biological assays for toxicity testing in tropical marine and freshwater environments, these studies explored the potential of various aquatic as test organisms for toxicity testing.
  8. Marine Protected Area Monitoring, Evaluation and Management: This research is focused on the establishment and management of community-managed Marine Protected Areas. Together with the local fishers, a participatory coastal habitat and resource assessments were done to delineate suitable areas for MPAs.
  9. Integrated Coastal Management: The Integrated Coastal Management Planning exemplifies the principles of Transparent, Accountable and Participatory decision-making in environmental governance. The integrated approach allows environmental managers to broaden its management scope to integrate land-sea interaction rather than doing land-use and coastal-use plans separately. 
  10. Mangrove Restoration Ecology: This study deals with the contribution and impacts of mangrove rehabilitation programs in restoring forest cover and performing nursery function. Changes in the plant and macrofaunal communities among degraded, restored and natural mangrove systems are documented and compared. The investigation includes the recovery of vegetation structure and biomass, the development of soil maturity, and the colonization of macrofaunal species from different age of stands and compares these patterns with the natural mangrove stands.
  11. Environmental Management and Policy: The studies conducted in this area focus on management issues related to water quality, solid wastes, and biodiversity conservation. Some of the studies offer insights on the state of water resources in aid of formulation and/or review of water resources management policies in the Philippines, surveys information on the rainfall supply as well as surface, coastal, marine and ground water resources, and examines various issues that impact on the quality and quantity of water and challenge Philippine sustainable development initiatives.
  12. BIARI International Survey Initiative on "Students, Consumption and the Environment": This survey initiative aims to contribute to improving environmental education and sustainability programs, by helping universities   evaluate students’ consumption patterns vis-à-vis their perceptions of impacts of human activities and awareness of global environmental issues, particularly climate change. The project, supported by the Watson Institute of Brown University, involves a comparative analysis of environmental awareness and consumption across schools in Brazil (Universidade Estácio de Sá), China (Zhejiang University) and the Philippines (Ateneo de Manila University).
