Systems Thinking Workshop for High School Teachers hosted by SOSE, ES Department and AIS

August 17, 2019
The School of Science and Engineering (SOSE) Science Education Outreach, Ateneo Institute of Sustainability (AIS) and Department of Environmental Science hosted a workshop for high school teachers titled "Integrated Environmental Science (and Society!): Introduction to Systems Thinking". This was held last May 18 and 25, 2019 in Room 506, PLDT Convergent Technologies Center, Ateneo de Manila University.
The workshop provided high school teachers the approach of using systems thinking in their teaching methods and enhance learning strategies. It introduced systems thinking principles and tools, specifically for application in the earth and environmental sciences, sustainability, and disaster readiness and risk reduction. Applications extend to the interactions and interconnections of science concepts and processes to the larger society.
Throughout the two-day workshop, participants identified feedback processes occurring in systems, made causal loop diagrams (CLDs) on specific environmental issues, used the Vensim software for CLDs, and had a demo of quantitative and computer-based system dynamics modeling. Selected students of the MS Science Education in Ateneo de Manila University also presented their thesis on systems thinking applications in the classroom.
High school teachers from Philippine Science High School - Main Campus, Our Lady of Fatima University, Gen. Licerio Geronimo Memorial National High School, SRBSMES Tanay, Dalandanan National High School in Valenzuela, Quezon City Academy, Xavier School Nuvali, Wellspring High School Inc., The National Teachers College, and Western Mindanao State University attended the workshop. The participants handle Earth Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Research, Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction, and Physics classes of for Grades 7 to 12 students. The workshop was lead by Dr. Charlotte Kendra Gotangco, Head of AIS Climate Change and Disaster Risk Program and Chair of the Department of Environmental Science, with the assistance of graduating MS Science Education students.
