The Program of Excellence in Mathematics (PEM) is a yearly enrichment program in Mathematical Problem Solving started in 1989. Originally established by the late Dr. Jose Marasigan to train the country’s representatives to the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), it aims to discover, encourage, and challenge gifted students by providing them with a special program of instruction in various fields of mathematics. Topics include number theory, combinatorics, advanced Euclidean geometry, algorithms and computing.
At the core of PEM’s objectives is the development of problem solving skills. The program exposes its participants to mathematical challenges and provides them with experiences that will improve the way they handle and solve problems in mathematics.
The program is open to all high schools: their top students in Math from Grades 9 to 12 and their teachers. The program will consist of seven sessions (including opening, closing ceremonies and the PEM Olympiad), with each session being held on a Saturday lasting for 3 hours (9am-12nn). The sessions will be conducted by members of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics.
The opening ceremonies for this year’s PEM will be held on September 3, from 9-11:30 am at the Faber Hall function room (FH101). After a simple lunch to be provided by the program, the first regular session will take place from 1-4pm on the same day.
This year, we have partnered with the Camp Math project of the Ateneo Mathematical Society (AMS), the home organization of our Math majors, to provide students with an even more complete mathematical experience. Now on its 23rd year, Camp Math aims to gather math enthusiasts all over Metro Manila to give them a renewed appreciation of mathematics through a fun learning avenue. By not only offering advanced math lectures but also activities such as a math fair and a quiz bee, the project aims to make outside-the-classroom learning more fun and meaningful by building camaraderie among its participants.
Please note that as far as problem solving is concerned, PEM will focus on Olympiad-type problems, while Camp Math will focus on problems encountered in quiz bees.
Registration Fees:
PEM only: P1,500
Camp Math only: P1,000
Both PEM and Camp Math: P2,000
